Top Gas Utility Stocks To Watch For 2014

LONDON -- I'm looking at some of your favorite FTSE 100 companies and examining how each will deliver their dividends.

Today, I'm putting telecommunications giantVodafoneGroup (LSE: VOD  ) (NASDAQ: VOD  ) under the microscope.

Current dividend policy
Vodafone unveiled a new dividend policy when it announced its annual results this week:"The Board ... going forward aims at least to maintain the ordinary dividend per share at current levels."

Vodafone's dividend for its financial year ended March 2013 is 10.19 pence a share. Therefore, investors can hope for aminimumof 10.19 pence a share (andperhapsmore)"going forward"-- though how far forward the company doesn't tell us.

Past dividend policy
How well has Vodafone delivered on its dividend policy in the past? Let me begin by saying that the group is one of just a handful of FTSE 100 companies to have provided shareholders with an above-inflation dividend increase each and every year since the turn of the millennium.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at ResMed (NYSE: RMD  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is ResMed doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, pretty well. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 10.0%, and inventory decreased 9.3%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue increased 9.9%, and inventory shrank 9.3%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks healthy. Revenue grew 1.9%, and inventory dropped 14.5%.

  • [By Anna Prior]

ResMed Inc.(RMD) seems like a solid growth stock, but March sales reportedly were aided by a quarter-end deal with a large customer, while profit was boosted by noncash accruals, according to Barron’s. The strains evident in march-quarter results may grow, if Medicare and other insurers decide to pay a bundled price for continuous positive airway pressure treatments. Shares slipped 3.8% to $50.49 in recent trading.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another earnings short-squeeze prospect is medical equipment player ResMed (RMD), which is set to release numbers on Wednesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect ResMed to report revenue of $400.01 million on earnings of 64 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for ResMed is extremely high at 25.6%. That means that out of the 139.26 million shares in the tradable float, 35.89 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 5%, or by about 1.72 million shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of RMD could easily trend sharply higher post-earnings as the shorts rush to cover some of their positions.

From a technical perspective, RMD is currently trending above its 50-day moving average and just below its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. Shares of RMD have started to flirt with a near-term breakout trade today, since the stock has tested some past overhead resistance at $48.07 a share. That move is starting to push shares of RMD within range of triggering a much bigger breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're bullish on RMD, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some key overhead resistance levels at $51.22 to $51.32 share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.17 million shares. If that breakout hits post-earnings, then RMD will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from October of 2013 that started just above $56 a share. If that gap gets filled with strong upside volume flows, then RMD could easily trend north of $60 a share.

I would simply avoid RMD or look for short-biased trades if after earnings

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

The chart of CA (CA) doesn't need much introduction -- it's about as simple as a technical pattern gets. CA is currently bouncing higher in an uptrending channel, a setup that gives us a very high probability range for shares of CA to remain within. Here's how to trade it.

Trendline support is the price level to watch right now in CA -- it's been the floor that's kept CA bouncing higher each of the last five times it's been tested. Even though it generally makes sense to be a buyer anywhere in an uptrend, the ideal time to buy comes on a bounce off of support.

Buying off a support bounce makes sense for two big reasons: It's the spot where shares have the furthest to move up before they hit resistance, and it's the spot where the risk is the least (because shares have the least room to move lower before you know you're wrong). With little room between the trendline support line and CA's most recent price, this week looks like as good a time as any to start building a position.

Evaluate Your Retirement Accounts in 15 Minutes or Less

#fivemin-widget-blogsmith-image-653160{display:none}.cke_show_borders #fivemin-widget-blogsmith-image-653160,#postcontentcontainer #fivemin-widget-blogsmith-image-653160{width:570px;display:block} How to Review Your Investments in 15 Minutes or Less Do you know how hard your money worked for you in 2014? If not, it's time to do a 15-minute checkup of your investments and make some plans for 2015. Step 1: Check Your Performance The first thing to do is pull out recent statements for all your investments, including retirement plans such as IRAs and 401(k)s, or check them online. If you don't have a recent paper statement or online access to your accounts, you may have to wait until the year-end statement arrives in the mail. But let's assume you have your statements in front of you. The important number you are searching for is your fund performance. Once you find that number, your next question should be: "Is that good?" To find an answer, you'll need to compare your funds with indexes that include similar investments. For example, if your funds are invested in large-company stocks, you might compare your performance with the S&P 500 (^GPSC). If you have a small cap fund, look to the Russell 2000 (^RUT) for guidance. For more tech-heavy investments, Nasdaq (^IXIC) might be the best comparison. I know it would be easier if I could simply tell you that if you hit a certain percentage, your investments had a great year. However, anyone who boils your fund performance down to such basic terms is doing you a disservice. You need to have an apples-to-apples comparison. That means comparing bond funds to bond funds, balanced funds to balanced funds and so on. In addition to indexes, you can also see how your funds performed by comparing them with funds offered by such well-established fund companies as Vanguard, American Funds or Fidelity. Don't freak if your fund is a few percentage points off the returns offered by indexes or similar funds, but if your large-cap fund earned 5 percent this year when the S&P 500 earned 28 percent, that should be a red flag. Step 2: Review the Fees After you check out fund performance, the next step is to look at what you paid to achieve it. In other words, fees. If you're investing in mutual funds, this should be listed on your statements as the expense ratio. If for some reason you don't find it on your 401(k) paperwork, you may need to call your employer's HR office and ask. Obviously, lower fees are better. Some mutual funds have expense ratios as low as 0.10 percent. Others might have combined fees that top 3 percent. Look at the fund families in the links above for comparisons. With so many excellent, low-cost investment choices available today, there is little reason to have a fund with more than a 1 percent expense ratio. Step 3: Rebalance Your Assets The final step is to rebalance your portfolio. Over time, as certain funds underperform or outperform, your asset allocation may become skewed. For example, because stocks did so well in 2013, you may have more of your savings in stocks than you're now comfortable with. That's important because the type of investments you have is directly related to the amount of risk you're taking. Stocks often earn more than bonds or money market funds, they certainly have this year, but if the market crashes, you could lose big. Ideally, you should have a balance of stocks, bonds and other investments that are based upon your individual goals. If you are 22 and saving for retirement, you can probably be stock-heavy since you have time to weather the market's ups and downs. But if you're 60, you'll want more of your money in bonds and money market funds so you don't risk wiping out your life savings as you approach retirement. When you opened your investment account, you may have gotten guidance on the right asset allocation for your situation. Now is the time to rebalance your investments so they reflect that advice. Stacy Johnson offers advice in "A Simple Way to Invest for Retirement" or consult with a fee-only investment professional. Bottom line? Make an investment review part of your year-end planning. Set 15 minutes aside, follow these three easy steps, and you'll feel a lot more confident that your money is ready to meet the new year.

Best Healthcare Technology Companies To Invest In Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Pandora (P) shares continued their downward spiral Wednesday falling 4.7% to $23.12 as of 11:35 a.m. New York time to extend its decline this week to 16%.

Getty Images Bitcoin made headlines last year when the value of all outstanding pieces of the electronic currency reached nearly $10 billion. It's not just speculators drawn to the new currency. Many businesses are also attempting to cash in on this growth: Several public companies, including Zynga (ZNGA) and Overstock.com (OSTK), accept Bitcoins as a form of payment. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen's firm has invested nearly $50 million in Bitcoin-related ventures, and it is looking to invest even more. And the Winklevoss twins -- who notoriously accused Facebook's (FB) Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their idea -- have been "in dialogue" with the SEC about opening the first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, according to Bloomberg. Yet a new survey from TheStreet.com (TST) reveals that 76 percent of consumers are not familiar with Bitcoin -- and 79 percent would never consider owning a currency like it. Does this signal opportunity for savvy investors? Or is this a fad you'd be wise to avoid? The Basics of Bitcoin Bitcoin is a completely unregulated form of currency developed by an anonymous Japanese programmer (according to some apocryphal claims) as a completely digital, peer-to-peer payment system that is independent of national currencies (which, Bitcoin users argue, are all subject to the riskiness of the underlying country). Bitcoins are rewarded throughout the day to a "Bitcoin miner" whose computer solves a series of algorithms quicker than other miners. The puzzles become more difficult over time, so the calculations take longer and the computations require more computing power. There will eventually be a total of 21 million Bitcoins (12.4 million are in circulation today) and we won't reach the point that they are effectively "mined out" until 2040. The value of a Bitcoin is supposed to be market-driven, meaning they're worth whatever the two parties in a transaction value them as. For example, in one of the original Bitcoin transactions, a "mi

Best Safest Companies For 2014

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers.

Advisors' Opinion:

    A look ahead
Despite these record numbers, by most accounts the Eagle Ford is just getting started. Tens of billions of dollars are being invested in the play this year, which means there will likely be many bright days ahead for South Texas. In fact, parts of the play have barely been tapped into. Consider the work that Halcon Resources (NYSE: HK  ) is doing in the East Texas portion of the play. The company announced earlier this month that production results from the last two wells it drilled are 18% higher than any well it has drilled in the area so far. On top of that, the output is 94% crude oil.

The biggest new holdings are Chesapeake Energyputs, and shares of Discovery Communications. Other new holdings of interest include Halcon Resources (NYSE: HK  ) , and Thompson Creek Metals (NYSE: TC  ) . Oil and gas company Halcon, operating in the promising Bakken region, as well as Texas's productive Eagle Ford shale region, among others, is expected to grow by 30% annually over the coming years. It recently reported 2012 net daily production 128% higher than year-ago levels, and proven reserves up 417%. Halcon was recently one of my colleague Joel South's top two energy holdings, and analysts at Stifel recently upped its ratingfrom Hold to Buy.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

The other risk that can't be overlooked is the threat from ceramic proppants, like those made byCARBO Ceramics (NYSE: CRR  ) , which could take a greater market share than is currently projected. Referring to the demand chart, frac sand is projected to remain 75% of the proppant market as that market grows. However, some shale plays like the Bakken are forcing producers to turn to higher-cost ceramic proppants because the returns are better.Halcon Resources (NYSE: HK  ) , for example, pointed out that its strategy to use ceramic proppants was one of thedriving forcesbehind its improved returns in the Bakken. The company saw much higher initial production rates, while expecting better estimated ultimate recovery rates from its investment in ceramic proppants. If ceramics do end up taking market share, it could crush my investment in Hi-Crush.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

EOG isn't the only company improving upon its methods to achieve better returns in the play.Halcon Resources (NYSE: HK  ) has experienced early positive results from updates it made to its Bakken drilling operations. Initial production results were improved in just the first two months of the project, with two wells seeing initial production rates increase by 20%, while a third well experienced an initial production rate that was 37% higher. Its success in the Bakken is the main reason behind the company's decision to spend about 38% of its capital budget on the play this year, which equates to about $475 million to drill 75 operated wells.

Outside the Dow, we once again saw some big moves lower from the coal stocks. Shares of Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) fell another 3.26%, while Consol Energy (NYSE: CNX  ) slid another 2.97%. Both companies are big players in mining coal and with the slowing Chinese economy, which is a huge customer for the industry and Obama's recent comments on climate control, the stocks have been bounded. While many experts had been expecting the president to make a stand against coal-fired power plants, a speech he gave on Tuesday was the first time we heard a plan to slow the carbon output caused by burning coal in electric power plants. Obama is aiming to put further restrictions on coal-fired power plants by forcing them to reduce their carbon emissions, a move that most would argue will cost more than it is worth and essentially force utility companies to shut down the plant or convert it to operate on another form of fuel. If his plan goes into effect, the move will surely hurt the coal industry as demand for the resource will take a nosedive.

We expect Caledonia to generate close to $600M in EBITDA. While RIGs mid-water OPEX has averaged about $125k/d we expect it to be lower at Caledonia. 2015 Consensus EBITDA for RIG is ~$3B which means 20% of RIGs 2015 EBITDA comes from the rigs that will become Caledonia. The problem (in a bear market) is that companies with lower end rigs trade at a discount just ask Awilco (AWLCF), Fred Olsen Energy, and Paragon Offshore (PGN) which trade at an average multiple of 3.3x on 2015 EBITDA versus RIG which trades at 6.3x.

ArQule (ARQL), a clinical-stage biotechnology company, researches and develops cancer therapeutics. This stock closed up 3.4% to $1.49 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $1.44-$1.54

    52-Week Range: $1.29-$2.94

    Thursday's Volume: 908,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 567,811

From a technical perspective, ARQL jumped higher here right above some near-term support at $1.40 with above-average volume. This move briefly pushed shares of ARQL back above its 50-day moving average of $1.53, before the stock closed just below that level at $1.49. This move is starting to push shares of ARQL within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ARQL manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.54 to $1.60 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARQL as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $1.40 or at $1.35 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 567,811 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ARQL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.66 to $1.78, or even $1.90 to $2.

Nokia's HERE division is worth E1bn assuming a similar market cap as TomTom (TMOAF.PK) but offers significant upside as maps become the next platform for e-commerce. Assuming Nokia's net cash position declines to E2bn at Q3 from E4.1bn in Q2 (given the E1.7bn NSN deal as well as incremental cash burn due to supporting product launches), the combined value of Nokia's Net Cash, HERE division and NSN division is in line with the current market cap of Nokia.
