Best Medical Stocks To Invest In Right Now

In the world of investing, the amount of data to factor into the purchase of a stock can be overwhelming. Researching quarterly earnings calls, 10-Ks, P/E ratios, and valuations is all important. But as important as the financial aspects of a company are, they shouldn't be the only credentials up for consideration. The leadership, culture, and diversity of that company all have an important part to play in whether it succeeds or not.

A recent Calvert Investments reportconsidered the diversity of companies in the S&P 100. Calvert ranked the companies based on 10 different diversity criteria, including Equal Employment Opportunity policies (EEO), internal and external diversity initiatives, highest-paid executives, board diversity, director selection criteria, and the company's commitment to overall diversity.

In its study, Calvert defined diversity as:"nondiscrimination and equal opportunity concerning recruitment, hiring, pay, promotion, training, and tenure without regard to race, gender, age, religion, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, HIV/AIDS status, medical status, and mental and physical ability."

Records fell on Wall Street Friday as another solid report on housing lifted the market for the second day in a row. There's a three-day weekend coming up -- something that often prompts investor caution -- but the gains were broad-based even though volume was fairly light. The VIX, which measures volatility, fell to its lowest level this year. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) gained 63 points, the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) rose 31, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) added 8, topping the record high set last week. The Dow Transportation average also raced to an all-time high, lifted by airline stocks. New home sales bounced back with a better than expected 6.4 percent increase last month. Lennar (LEN) and D.R. Horton (DHI) both rose 4 percent. Pulte (PHM), Beazer (BZH) and Hovnanian (HOV) also solid posted gains. Earnings continue to drive retail stocks. Gap (GPS) edged higher even though net fell. Foot Locker (FL) gained 1½ percent after topping expectations. GameStop (GME) rose 4 percent. Its net rose, helped by the rollout last year of new Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Zumiez (ZUMZ) rose 5½ percent on an earnings beat. But Aeropostale (ARO) tumbled 24 percent. Its loss widened and sales declined. The retailer continues to struggle with teen fashion trends. Also on the earnings front, TiVo (TIVO) rose 2 percent as it swung to a profit from a year ago loss. It also reported an increase in the number of subscribers. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) rose 6 percent on news the company plans to eliminate up to 16,000 additional workers in an effort to cut costs. And several stocks extended big moves from yesterday. Judging from the company it's keeping Green Automotive Co. (OTCMKTS:GACR) may have just made its way into the upper echelon of small cap stock opportunities. The electric car company joins Elite Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OTCBB:ELTP), Amarantus Bioscience Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AMBS), and only three other companies as Wall-Street.com's "Best 6 Stocks" for January of 2014. As one of the top information resources for investors - particularly in terms of information regarding small and micro cap stocks - being named among the site's top pick is an accolade for AMBS, ELTP, and GACR. Even more impressive is that Green Automotive Co. was the only consumer-goods name among those six. Amarantus Bioscience Holdings and Elite Pharmaceuticals are biotechnology names... an industry that can and often does attract a lot of attention just by the nature of the business. The other three names making the "Best 6" list were an energy explorer, a power-management technology manufacturer, and prescription/medical food producer. For an electric car manufacturer to make the list speaks quite highly of GACR.

Top 5 Semiconductor Companies To Own For 2014

Early on Thursday, analysts at Jefferies upgraded Intel Corporation (INTC), commenting that they believe the semiconductor and microprocessor manufacturer “offers one of the best alpha generation opportunities” in its sector.

Jefferies upgraded INTC from “Hold” to “Buy” and see shares reaching $30, up from the previous target of $27. This new price target suggests a 33% upside to the stock’s Thursday closing price of $22.63.

Mark Lipacis, an analyst at Jefferies, said, “We believe INTC offers one of the best alpha generation opportunities in semis: 1) it is finally focusing its manufacturing leadership to make MPUs that are lower power, higher performance and cheaper than competitive solutions. This new focus should translate to share gains in sub-$500 tablets, 2-in-1 PCs and handsets. 2) Consensus incorrectly assumes INTC’s x86 MPUs have an inherent disadvantage vs ARM, and its 3yr, $60b investment nets to zero advantage.”

British radar engineer Geoffrey Dummer first made public the concept of integrated circuits on May 7, 1952. This was still years before practical transistor-based electronics would hit the consumer market, but the notion caught on with two very talented engineers: Robert Noyce, founder of Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS  ) , and Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments. Working independently, the two men would help build the entire semiconductor industry from the ground up, using Dummer's concepts as a starting point.

5 Top Gold Mining Stocks: Randgold, B2Gold, and More

By Michael Vallo

Few assets are more widely hated than gold. Over the past three years the price has fallen from over $1,900 an ounce to a recent $1,195, and with a strengthening dollar, virtually no inflation, and interest rate hikes on the horizon, the future doesn't look bright for the shiny metal. Which makes it an interesting investment.

Bloomberg News

"For a contrarian you can't find a sector that is more out of favor right now than gold," says Joe Foster, manager of the Van Eck International Investors Gold Fund (INIVX). The former geologist expects volatility to continue for the next few months, but with seemingly every headwind already pushing on the price of gold, it might take little to spark a rally.

One possible catalyst is a Swiss referendum on Nov. 30 that would force the Swiss central bank to bolster its gold reserves, though a recent poll suggests the odds are against its passing. Barron's technical analyst Michael Kahn recently made a bullish case for gold.

Foster thinks small and mid-sized miners such as Randgold Resources (GOLD), Eldorado Gold (EGO) and B2 Gold (BTG) are particularly well positioned within the gold mining space.

According to Foster, evaluating gold stocks is less about valuation metrics and more about the company's ability to grow and develop mining properties. He and his team break down companies mine-by-mine and run financial models to project production capacity and cost.

The performance of gold mining stocks is closely correlated to the price of gold, so it's not surprising that the fund has struggled lately. This year the fund is down a little bit less than one percent, well behind the stock market but ahead of the 5.8% average drop for its category peers. Over 10 years the fund has outperformed 99% of all precious metal equity funds with an average annual return of 4.23% according to Morningstar.

Barron's asked Foster to share five of his five favorite gold mining stocks. Investor beware, however: these small miners can be volatile, zooming higher when gold is in favor and falling hard when it's not.

B2Gold: The Vancouver based company's mine in Namibia is scheduled to begin production this quarter and reach full production levels next year.  The mine has stayed on schedule and budget and could be a candidate for expansion in the future. Foster also likes B2Gold's recent acquisition of Papillon Resources, which is developing a "world class gold property" in Mali. "They've got a long development story ahead of them," says Foster.

Torex Gold Resources: The $1.2 billion miner is developing a property in Mexico, the company's first mine. Torex (TXG.Canada) acquired the El Limon-Guajes open pit gold mine from a previous owner, who had poor relations with the local stakeholders and failed to navigate the regulatory process. Torex has put the mine back on track with construction expected to be completed midway through 2015. "They've gotten friendly with the people on the ground and managed to get their permits," says Foster, "geologically we like the deposit too, it's a good sized mine." The company has also started developing a potential second mine in the same region.

Rio Alto Mining: Foster prefers small companies or "junior mines" to larger companies. "The large caps have really gotten too big for their own good," says Foster," it's very hard to sustain a large gold company."  Rio Alto (RIOM), with a market value of just $815 million, operates a successful heap leach project in Peru. Heap leaching is an alternative method of recovering lower grade gold with much lower costs. Foster says Rio Alto has had success with the method and recently acquired another heap leach operation in Peru.

Eldorado Gold Corp: Eldorado is developing the Skouries Mine in Northern Greece. The company, which operates one other Greek mine, acquired the property in 2011 after a legal battle between the Greek government and the European Court held up development. Production is now slated to begin in 2016. The company also has properties in Turkey, which is one of the lowest cost environments for mining.

Randgold Resources: With the exception of B2Gold, all of Foster's picks are regional. Foster says the geographic focus allows companies to better handle the local regulatory and political situation. Randgold Resources operates exclusively in Africa, and mostly in West Africa. Foster likes the $6.5 billion company because it has one of the most successful discovery track records in the industry. Discovering gold deposits is much more profitable than acquiring smaller companies for their gold properties, the more common tactic.

5 Best Gold Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Carlo Allegri/Invision/APRon Swanson (the "Parks & Recreation" character played by Nick Offerman) follows an iffy investing strategy. Reality TV shows offer a handful of average Americans the chance to race around the world, outwit, outplay and outlast their rivals, or lose weight, all to win serious money. Luckily, the rest of us saps tuning in can hope to better our financial futures from the comfort of our couches -- without eating bugs or faking love for a millionaire. Because some of the best sitcom characters can offer us some excellent (and hilarious) money advice. Admittedly, sometimes, their advice is off base. But, even then, you can learn from their mistakes. Here are three of my favorite fiscally savvy (or at least fiscally enthusiastic) characters, and what they have to teach us. 1. Don't Make Your Nest Egg Out of Gold Alone

The biggest new holdings are Chesapeake Energyputs, and shares of Discovery Communications. Other new holdings of interest include Halcon Resources (NYSE: HK  ) , and Thompson Creek Metals (NYSE: TC  ) . Oil and gas company Halcon, operating in the promising Bakken region, as well as Texas's productive Eagle Ford shale region, among others, is expected to grow by 30% annually over the coming years. It recently reported 2012 net daily production 128% higher than year-ago levels, and proven reserves up 417%. Halcon was recently one of my colleague Joel South's top two energy holdings, and analysts at Stifel recently upped its ratingfrom Hold to Buy.

5 Best Gold Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Renaissance Oil Corp (ROE)

Renaissance Oil Corp, formerly San Antonio Ventures Inc., is developing a diversified shale and mature fields portfolio for development in Mexico and Spain. Next, I turned to an evaluation of gross profit margin (gpm), net profit margin (npm), return on assets (roa), return on equity (roe) and return on invested capital (roi). The example below only includes gross and net profit margin, however, I review data on all the metrics stated above.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

Question: What is your view on Travelers (TRV) competitive advantage? How troubling is the huge fixed-income portion of their investment portfolio (in relation to future inflation)? How much do you like Jay Fishman? I really like the fact they are aggressively repurchasing shares and the fact that it is trading at book value, which I estimate to earn around 13% (ROE).

  • [By Canadian Value]

Financials were hit extremely hard during the 2008009 financial crisis, and US and European bank valuations plunged to levels only seen twice before in the past 120 years, notably during the Great Depression of the 1930s and the Inflation Crisis of the 1970s. Over the past few years, many banks have rebuilt their balance sheets, altered their business mixes and cut costs. Financial valuations have tracked returns very closely, and both have recovered from the lows reached in mid-2011. We do not believe return on equity (ROE) will likely recover to prior peaks, but our analysis shows that bank holdings have potential to improve further, particularly as business conditions begin to normalize and lending activities (at some point in the cycle) resume.

Gold mining stocks are pretty much a disaster. Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM) is down 50 percent in 2013. Agnico Eagle Mines (NYSE: AEM) is off 51 percent. The NYSE Arca Gold BUGS Index is down 56 percent.

  • [By Daniel Putnam]

The second factor working in gold stocksfavor is that analysts are growing optimistic again. Yesterday, HSBC put out a bullish note on gold and upgraded Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM), Yamana Gold (AUY), Barrick Gold, Iamgold (IAG), and Goldcorp. Most gold stocks are ranked oldor uy(as opposed to trong Buy by the majority of analysts, meaning that there plenty of room for continued positive news flow on this front.

5 Best Gold Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Golden Star Resources Ltd(GSS)

In addition, it holds interests in various gold exploration projects in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Cote d?Ivoire, as well as holds and manages exploration properties in Brazil in South America. The company was founded in 1984 and is based in Littleton, Colorado.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Duprey]

    Clash of the titans
When bears are raging on the gold bullion market, it's not surprising to see gold stocks getting mauled as well. Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  ) was the biggest loser in the sector, losing a quarter of its market cap on no company-specific news, though a report last Friday indicated that a large number of hedge funds had recently dumped their positions in the mid-tier miner. Yet it wasn't all that much better among the majors, either, as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) fell almost 13% and Kinross Gold (NYSE: KGC  ) was down 14%.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  )
It's simple physics: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. When gold prices nosedived earlier this week, gold miners with historically higher operating costs took the brunt of the hit. For the most part, that meant that development-stage miners, and those operating in Africa, where labor and political costs make cost-effective mining a challenge, took it on the chin. Possibly no stock was hammered more than Golden Star Resources, a gold miner in Ghana, which lost about one-quarter of its value on Monday alone.

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] ating price of the commodity, along with the geopolitical risks involved in mining in African nations such as Ghana, are just two of the obstacles the firm is facing. In addition, as one of the smallest gold mining firms in the industry, with a market cap of just $122 million, Golden Star has had a very difficult time financing its latest expansion projects. With share prices tumbling towards all-time lows, gurus such as Steven Cohen, Chuck Royce and Arnold Schneider have already sold out their positions in the troubled firm.

Why Have Gurus Lost Faith in Golden Star?

Despite aggressive expansion over the past decade, the Toronto-based gold mining firm has not been able to take advantage of its increased production output. Gold prices might have exploded over a ten-year period, yet the recent six-month decline has put a huge strain on Golden Star. The expedited maturation of its mines is particularly troubling, since the accelerated extraction rates, which allowed for short-term profits, are now falling considerably. The impact of the company excessive overproduction on profits and growth is clear: decreasing gold reserves mean less production, and thus reduced revenue for the gold miner. When the decline in metal prices are taken into account, the outlook is even more grim.

In addition to overexpansion at the wrong time, Golden Star position has weakened due to its comparably less efficient operations. Unlike industry peers, such as IamGold Corp. (IAG) or Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI), the majority of the Toronto-based miner assets contain refractory ore, which is far more expensive to extract than non refractory ore. And, in an attempt to switch production to the lower cost gold ore, and thus increase margins, Golden Star has depleted its minesnon refractory ore. With low reserves and mounting cash costs, the firm inevitably turned to new acquisitions.

    Overpriced Acquisitions and Geopolitical Risk

    The purchase

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] some future and gave several reasons for my bearish stance towards the stock. A small market, high geopolitical risk in some of the countries the firm operates, along with overexpansion in times of fluctuating gold prices gave tune to the massive shedding of shares by investment gurus. Five months have past since I last considered Golden Star potential, and everything indicates the situation has not changed.

Guru Activity Shows a Clear Tendency

Steven Cohen (Trades, Portfolio), Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio) and Arnold Schneider (Trades, Portfolio), had already sold their entire holdings in the company by October 2013, indicating they had little faith in the gold miner recovery. By the end of the year, Jim Simons' (Trades, Portfolio) Renaissance Technologies took a similar decision, reducing its stake in the firm by 32%. This tendency towards the sale of Golden Star stock was duly noted by investors and analysts alike, and concurs with the company poor performance.

    A Look at the Numbers

In an industry plagued by fluctuating metal prices, operating with lofty margins can be quite helpful. Yet Golden Star cannot afford such luxuries. With an operating margin of 0.1% and a net margin of -56.8% the firm is in a tight spot, especially when compared to the industry average. Unlike its industry peersmedian, which are of 2.26% and -0.09%, respectively, the Toronto-based gold miner is struggling to generate decent cash flow levels. Further metrics depict a even worse situation for shareholders: return on equity is currently at -370% and revenue growth is estimated to reach a poor 2.5%. Purchasing overpriced assets, relative to current gold prices, is surely one of the reasons for such grim figures, as financial losses have taken their toll on Golden Star.

The announcement of its 2013 full year, and fourth quarter earnings only helped to add to shareholdersconcerns. A 15% decline in revenue was expected by those

10 Best Net Payout Yield Stocks To Buy Right Now

“I speak Curian Capital, the advisor speaks advisor and the client doesn’t speak either,” says Keith Johnson, vice president of practice management at the aforementioned Denver-based managed account provider.

Johnson made the observation by way of introduction to the topic of effective client communication. It’s a hot topic at the moment, as empathetic communication takes more of a front seat with the recognition that not all clients think and act alike. But for advisors that are tempted to dismiss it with a “yeah yeah” wave of the hand, Johnson has four areas he’s zeroed in on to attract, and retain, more business.

1). Financial jargon — “When I came to Curian, I quickly realized they were using different jargon than the firm at which I previously worked,” Johnson observes. “It’s just the nature of the business and something we all do. Now imagine that each advisor does it in their own practices and it's all completely different from what the client understands.”

Shares of tool companySnap-On (NYSE: SNA  ) rose 7.76% today after beating estimates on both the top and bottom lines. Revenue came in at $797.5 million for the quarter, a 5.9% increase from last year and higher than the $779.5 million analysts were looking for. Earnings per share hit $1.60, again higher than the $1.56 that was expected. One of the areas that management would like to focus on moving forward is expanding its vehicle repair garage, which again would make sense given the average age of vehicles on the road today.

According to Morgan Stanley, the server business generated about $4.9 billion of the company's $15.4 billion in server sales last year. This enormous volume is due to the fact that IBM may be producing the overall market's highest volumes, at the lowest profit level; which suggests this segment is doomed.
