Hot Transportation Stocks To Buy For 2014

Imagine that your dishwasher was like an obnoxious Facebook friend, and constantly told you about every detail of its day with a never-ending stream of status updates. Sounds dull, but a dishwasher obsessed with telling you how it was doing could actually let you know when it needed maintenance before it broke down, as well as how to fix it, saving you valuable time and money. In a nutshell, that's how General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) plans to boost global GDP by $10 trillion-$15 trillion over the next 20 years. It's called the Industrial Internet, and on Wednesday GE doubled down on the initiative, announcing new partners and new products in its bid to create a global network of smart, responsive machines.

The idea behind the so-called Industrial Internet is simple: The more data we have about our machines, the more efficiently we can use them. General Electric, with products in fields as diverse as aviation, wind energy, rail transportation, medical diagnostics, and oil and gas production, has estimated that inefficiencies in the way industrial machines are used cost hundreds of billions of dollars a year. The culprit behind these losses is primarily unpredictable maintenance: Because machine operators don't know exactly when a system will break down, they have to waste time inspecting systems that are perfectly healthy, and they have to waste time repairing broken systems that could have been kept in working order through more timely maintenance. GE envisions a world in which all machines are outfitted with sensors so that they know when they need maintenance, and have the networked communication capabilities to tell their owners what's wrong and how to fix it. With perfect data about our machines, there's no reason they shouldn't operate at perfect efficiency.

Standardization and consolidation greatly improved the quality of rail service during this period, and three more transcontinental railroads (following the completion of the first in 1869) had also been built in the two years prior to the publication of the Transportation Index. Two of these transcontinental railroad operators, the Northern Pacific and the Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP  ) , were part of the first index, and when Dow expanded the index to 14 components a year later, the Central Pacific (the western half that joined Union Pacific in building the 1869 transcontinental line) also became a component. Dow eventually settled on 12 components in 1886; this would inform the construction of the Industrial Average when it was first published a decade later.

On December 17, 2012, the Company acquired 100% interest in Scandic American Shipping Ltd. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Taylor Muckerman]

As for the competition, not many companies have fared much better. For example, another Bermuda-based oil carrier, Nordic American Tankers (NYSE: NAT  ) , has seen its cash from operations fall below sea level the past two years. In Nordic's case, its fleet size of 20 double-hull Suezmax tankers isn't nearly as diverse as Teekay's, but Suezmax tankers are capable of toting up to 1 million barrels of oil per voyage.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Shipping magnateNordic American Tankers (NYSE: NAT  ) announced today its second-quarter dividend of $0.16 per share, the same rate it's paid for the past two quarters after slashing the payout 47% from $0.30 per share. Even so, it marks the 64th consecutive quarterly dividend payment the tanker operator has made.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another shipping player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Nordic American Tankers (NAT), an international tanker company that owns approximately 20 modern double-hull Suezmax tankers, including four newbuilding vessels. This stock is off to a slow start in 2013, with shares off by 7.7%.

If you take a look at the chart for Nordic American Tankers, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last month and change, with shares dropping from its high of $10.31 to its recent low of $7.65 a share. During that downtrend, shares of NAT have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of NAT have just started to bounce higher off that $7.65 low and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. This bounce could be signaling that the downside volatility for NAT is over at least in the near-term.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in NAT if it manages to break out above its 50-day moving average at $8.50 and then once it takes out its 200-day moving average at $8.63 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 1.01 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then NAT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9.89 to $10.31 a share.

Traders can look to buy NAT off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $7.65 a share. One can also buy NAT off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

For investors who want a piece of this developing trend, Transocean and Seadrill are two of the bigger players in this arena. Other offshore drillers/rig operators are Noble (NE) and Ensco (ESV). Companies that provide services to offshore drillers and benefit from increases in exploration and drilling activity are Gulfmark Offshore (GLF), Hornbeck (HOS), Seacor (CKH) and Tidewater (TDW).

Margins matter. The more Seacor Holdings (NYSE: CKH  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Seacor Holdings's competitive position could be.

FedEx (NYSE: FDX  ) , Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) , and Home Depot (NYSE: HD  ) are just a few of the major U.S. employers that have started instituting the use of prepaid debit cards.

  • [By Alex Planes]

Let's say that all a delivery-based company pays for at present is the cost of a driver's salary. Amazon's total costs for FedEx (NYSE: FDX  ) or UPS to get a package from Point A to Point B can add up on a Prime subscription, but for simplicity's sake let's focus on its grocery business right now. (FedEx founder Fred Smith has been talking about using unmanned cargo freighters for the air-bound leg of a package's journey for at least four years now -- former Wirededitor and current robotic start-up honcho Chris Anderson reported as much on his blog in 2009-- so he clearly sees value in delivery automation as well.) I'll return to package delivery a little further on, but the pizza comparison will be fairly easy to make, because the economics are fairly straightforward, and you've already got the picture of a little robot-transported pie in the sky stuck in your head anyway.
