5 Best Blue Chip Stocks To Own For 2014

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) traded mostly mixed today as investors reacted to an ambiguous earnings season thus far, finishing the day up 0.1%. Even then, it was the worst performer among the three major indexes. Stock downgrades weighed on the blue chips, while Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) shares jumped despite missing earnings estimates.

In the meantime, March existing home sales numbers landed slightly below expectations. The National Association of Retailers said home sales last month totaled 4.92 million, below projections of 5.01 million. Still, sales were up more than 10% from a year ago, indicating the housing market is still improving, though perhaps not as quickly as some had hoped.

Caterpillar, the world's largest maker of earth-moving equipment, opened the day essentially flat but gained in the afternoon to finish up 2.8%. The manufacturer reported per-share first-quarter profit down 45% to $1.31, and total revenue down 17% to $13.21 billion. Both figures missed estimates by about 4%. Management also lowered its full-year EPS guidance to $7 a share, while analysts had projected $7.67 a share. Still, trading near its 52-week low, the stock was up as CEO Doug Oberhelman said he thought mining purchases had hit bottom, and pointed to an increase in sales in China as another positive. The company also plans to buy back about $1 billion worth of shares, its first such program since 2008.

After much anticipation, Apple (AAPL) has finally secured the necessary license to sell its iPhone devices for China Mobile, the largest carrier in the emerging economy.

China Mobile has approximately 740 million subscribers in China, making this deal especially significant for the tech giant. The low-cost iPhone 5C debuted yesterday and will be used to target emerging markets like China, making this deal all the more significant. Investors spent the day sulking over Tuesday’s debut of two new iPhones, which were not up to expectations, as shares have been tanking ever since the announcement.

Apple shares finished the day down a hefty $26.93, or 5.76%. The stock is now over 33% away from its 52-week high.

Getty Images/Bloomberg/Gianluca Colla Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From a CEO busted for spying on a larger rival to a satellite television provider raising the bar, here's a rundown of the week's smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. DISH Network (DISH) -- Winner In a deal with bigger implications than you may initially think, Disney (DIS) is giving DISH Network rights to stream live and on-demand shows from ABC, Disney and ESPN. This is a truly mobile service, opening the door for DISH to begin offering a standalone Web-based service. A lot of bigger companies than DISH have tried to talk major networks and broadcasters into similar arrangements, only to be shot down. DISH succeeded because it had a bargaining chip in its ad-skipping Hopper DVR technology. DISH agreed that users of the streaming service wouldn't be able to zap through the commercials for newer Disney shows. Modell's Sporting Goods -- Loser Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) is filing a complaint in a New Jersey court after it caught Mitchell Modell -- CEO of rival Modell's -- spying on it. The lawsuit claims that Modell posed as a Dick's executive to gain access to private areas and learn business techniques at Dick's. If the allegations hold up, Modell's behavior was at the very least unethical, not to mention ironic -- a sporting goods chain's helmsman resorting to such unsportsmanlike conduct. Wouldn't it have been easier to just hire a Dick's executive? Zillow (Z) -- Winner Speaking of the right way to pry away information from a competitor, Zillow announced on Wednesday night that it was bringing on a key executive from Realtor.com parent Move (MOVE). A new position of chief industry development officer is being created for Errol Samuelson, who previously served as president of Realtor.com and Move's chief strategy officer. The beautiful thing about prying away a key employee from another

So far this year we've seen major discoveries from the likes of ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) , Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) and Anadarko (NYSE: APC  ) . The Shenandoah discovery by ConocoPhillips and Anadarko encountered an incredible 1,000 feet of net pay, which is the portion that is commercially viable. That's more than double the size of ConocoPhillips' Coronado discovery which is partnered with Chevron. These discoveries are what's driving the industry's increased pace of investment and why it would appear that the Gulf's oil production is likely headed to new heights.

IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) is today's worst Dow stock, down 2%, single-handedly holding the Dow back. I've written before why I'm not a fan of how the Dow is structured. Due to the simplistic nature of the DJIA, its weightings are based solely on stock prices, and IBM is the largest component of the DJIA, making up nearly 10% of the index -- this, despite the fact that IBM is by no means the largest company in the index at just half the size of ExxonMobil.

It's certainly not on par with International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) and Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL), at least in terms of size. But, shares of CA, Inc. (NASDAQ:CA) do offer something that ORCL and IBM shares may not offer at this point... a lot of upside opportunity. In fact, if history is any indication, CA may be on the cusp of 40% pop, and maybe even more.

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images MasterCard (MA), the world's second-largest debit and credit card company, said it was extending its zero-liability policy for cardholders in the United States to include all PIN-based and ATM transactions. The move follows several data breaches at U.S. companies including one at Target (TGT) late last year involving the theft of about 40 million credit and debit card records. "The move by MasterCard just enhances the sense of security for people at a time when it has been shaken up significantly in recent times," said Gil Luria, an analyst with Wedbush Securities. Zero-liability protection currently covers card transactions that require a customer's signature but doesn't apply if an account holder's personal identification number, or PIN, was used for unauthorized transactions. The new policy will take effect in October. Zero-liability protection means the account holder won't be held responsible for unauthorized transactions. Larger rival Visa's (V) zero-liability policy doesn't apply to PIN-based and ATM transactions, according to information available on the company's website. "The changes that we're making in cardholder protection combined with our efforts to move the U.S. payments industry to EMV chip technology will help deliver safer shopping experiences to consumers," said Chris McWilton, president of North American markets for MasterCard. The two companies have urged banks and retailers to meet an October 2015 deadline for the adoption of "EMV" chip technology that would make it safer to pay with plastic. "This all comes back to the adoption of EMV. Of all the cards that are breached at ATMs, a majority of them are non-EMV cards. This is just another way for the company to impress upon the importance of quickly adopting EMV cards," said Philip Philliou, managing partner of Philliou Partners, a firm that helps banks and retailers select payment processors. U.S. cards issued by MasterCard will also
