5 Best Oil Service Stocks To Own Right Now

It's no secret that capital spending budgets are falling at oil companies across the globe, but that's not the case for this company, writes MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, who points out the efficiency measures and new technology products responsible for much of its success.

Everyone knows that capital spending budgets at the world's oil companies are falling.

But it just doesn't seem to matter for Schlumberger (SLB). Schlumberger is a member of my Jubak's Picks portfolio.

On January 17, the oil services and technology company reported fourth quarter earnings of $1.35 a share, beating Wall Street estimates by two cents a share. Earnings grew by 29.8% year over year.

Revenue climbed 7.4% year over year to $11.91 billion. That was slightly below the $11.98 projected by Wall Street.

I think you can tell what's going on at Schlumberger simply by taking a glance at those earnings and revenue growth rates. Revenue growth is indeed sluggish in the oil field. But Schlumberger's margins are climbing, thanks to efficiencies at the company and, especially, thanks to its years of investment in oil field technologies.

Freight

The Freight segment consists of the operating results of the Con-way Freight business unit. Con-way Freight is a less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carrier that utilizes a network of freight service centers to provide day-definite regional, inter-regional and transcontinental less-than-truckload freight services throughout North America. LTL carriers transport shipments from multiple shippers utilizing a network of freight service centers combined with a fleet of line-haul and pickup-and-delivery tractors and trailers. Freight is picked up from customers and consolidated for shipment at the originating service center. Freight is consolidated for transportation to the destination service centers or freight assembly centers. At Freight assembly centers, freight from various service centers can be reconsolidated for transportation to other freight assembly centers or destination service centers. From the destination service center, the freight is delivered to the customer. Typically, LTL shipments weigh between 100 and 15,000 pounds. In 2011, Con-way Freight average weight per shipment was 1,305 pounds.

Logistics

The Logistics segment consists of the operating results o! f the Menlo Worldwide Logistics business unit. Menlo Worldwide Logistics develops contract-logistics solutions, which can include managing complex distribution networks, and providing supply-chain engineering and consulting, and multimodal freight brokerage services. Menlo Worldwide Logisticssupply-chain management offerings are primarily related to transportation-management and contract-warehousing services. Contract warehousing refers to the optimization and operation of warehouses for customers using technology and warehouse-management systems to reduce inventory carrying costs and supply-chain cycle times. For several customers, contract-warehousing operations include light assembly or kitting operations.

Menlo Worldwide Logistics provides its services using a customer- or project-based approach when the supply-chain solution requires customer-specific transportation management, single-client warehouses, and/or single-customer technological solutions. However, Menlo Worldwide Logistics also utilizes a shared-resource, process-based approach that leverages a centralized transportation-management group, multi-client warehouses and technology to provide scalable solutions to multiple customers. Additionally, Menlo Worldwide Logistics segments its business based on customer type. At December 31, 2011, Menlo Worldwide Logistics operated 76 warehouses in North America, of which 55 were leased by Menlo Worldwide Logistics and 21 were leased or owned by clients of Menlo Worldwide Logistics. Con-way Truckload provides dry-van transportation services to manufacturing, industrial and retail customers while using single drivers as well as two-person driver teams over long-haul routes, with each trailer containing only one customer goods. This origin-to-destination freight movement limits intermediate handling and is not dependent on the same network of locations utilized by LTL carriers. On average, Con-way Truckload transports shipments more than 800 miles from origin to destination. Under its regional service offering, Con-way Truckload transports truckload shipments of less than 600 miles, including local-area service for truckload shipments of less than 100 miles.

Con-way Truckload offers through-trailer service into and out of Mexico through all major gateways in Texas, Arizona and California. At December 31, 2011, Con-way Truckload operated five owned terminals with bulk fuel, tractor and trailer parking, and in some cases, equipment maintenance and washing facilities. In addition, Con-way Truckload also utilizes various drop yards for temporary trailer storage throughout the United States. Advisors' Opinion:

Navistar hasn't been entirely locked out of the trucking market, though. The company won several contracts from the Defense Department in support of its military vehicles, including its MaxxPro mine-resistant, ambush-protected armored vehicle. On the commercial front, Navistar won part of an order in May from trucking company Con-Way (NYSE: CNW  ) , which purchased 200 ProStar vehicles from the company. Still, the fact that rival Paccar (NASDAQ: PCAR  ) got an even bigger portion of the Con-Way order is just one more sign of the ongoing struggles Navistar faces.

Wunderlich’s Nicholas Bender thinks FedEx’s results bode well for Old Dominion (ODFL), Con-way (CNW) and Saia (SAIA):

We expect all less-than-truckload carriers to benefit in 2Q14 from the same trends that carried FedEx Freight to a banner 4Q14. This includes Hold-rated Old Dominion, which will continue to grow at well above market rates, and Buy-rated Con-way, which we believe can leverage a strong 2Q14 to prime the pump on margin enhancement efforts. Our favorite name in the space remains Saia (SAIA-$42.92, Buy), which will once again see accelerating tonnage growth in 2Q14. Though tonnage growth will moderate in 2H14 due to steeper comps, there remains considerable potential for the company to boost yield and continue winning incremental business with new accounts.

The company, formerly known as Rainier Pulp & Paper Company, was founded in 1926. Rayonier is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Even with those unfavorable conditions, though, fellow forest-products REIT Rayonier (NYSE: RYN  ) reported second-quarter sales that more than doubled from year-ago levels thanks to the company's boost in ownership of a joint venture in New Zealand from 26% to 65%. Even excluding those effects, higher sawlog demand in its Gulf of Mexico region and strong export demand for its Pacific Northwest products offset higher logging costs. Those gains were much healthier than what Rayonier experienced in its performance-fibers division, but the company expects to exit the higher-cost portion of that business segment. Rayonier's results set the stage for similar performance from Plum Creek.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt Thalman]

These comments not only sent Pulte's shares lower by 2.85%, but it also sent DR Horton's (NYSE: DHI  ) stock lower by 2.71% and Lennar's (NYSE: LEN  ) stock down 2.48% today. As housing prices begin to slow, the difference between what a homebuilder can build a home for and sell it for will remain stable or also just slowly grow, making future revenue and profits experience perhaps weaker-than-expected results. Currently both Pulte and Lennar are trading at around 23 and 17 times past earnings and 11 and 13 times future results, but if analysts' expectations for future results are higher than what they actually come in at, the shares of the homebuilders will probably fall lower in the future.

The housing prices in US are experiencing a strong upward trend. As expected, a number of viewpoints have emerged regarding the source and impacts of this increase in housing prices over the last year. According to yesterday's reports on Case-Shiller index, the home prices in the US have experienced the strongest upward surge since FY06. The report posted a 10.9% increase in home prices in March on YoY basis. A few analysts have suggested that this increase in prices has not occurred because of an increase in demand for housing but because of increase in investing activity in the housing industry. It is a fact that a number of institutional investors have shown signs of increasing their exposure to the housing market in expectation of further improvement. However, when we consider the report in a holistic economic perspective, the proponents of increased housing activity from actual consumers make a stronger case. The consumer confidence is growing strong through an increase in disposable income and spending trends. The overall economic activity is showing signs of recovery through these changes in the behavior of US consumers. The housing companies, which have been subject to a very slow performance in the three years following the crisis, are expected to benefit the most from this surge in prices. In this situation, we are considering D.R. Horton Inc. (DHI) as a prospective investment in the industry. The company is among the larger players in the industry with a market capitalization of $8.3 billion and net sales revenue of $5.2 billion in FY12.

D.R. Horton Inc. (NYSE: DHI) trades in a 52-week range of $17.52 to $27.75, and closed at $20.88 on Friday. The company’s market cap is $6.72 billion, and the share price is down about 3% in the past 12 months. The consensus price target on the stock is around $23.50, implying a potential gain of 12.4%. Horton has met or exceeded EPS estimates in each of the past four quarters. Shares were trading down about 0.6% Monday morning at $20.75. The company is expected to post EPS of $0.29 on revenues of $1.45 billion when it reports results Tuesday.
