Even as Europe struggles to avoid further meltdowns, the economic pulse across the English Channel is starting to quicken.
A steady drumbeat of positive economic reports has led to expectations that much better days lie ahead in 2014 and 2015 for the U.K. economy. Meanwhile, British stock prices, which have failed to keep pace with their U.S. counterparts, are starting to emerge as timely bargains.
Green Shoots
Back in 2010 and 2011, U.S. economists started to notice signs of life among both manufacturers and consumers, citing a rising tide of "green shoots" that popped up from the soil. That early evidence of a moderate recovery in the U.S. eventually led to robust share price gains across all U.S. asset classes.
Fast-forward to 2013, and the same playbook appears to be emerging in the U.K. For example:

As of March 3, 2012, 60% of its stores were freestanding; 51% of its stores included a drive-thru pharmacy; 24% included one-hour photo shops, and 46% included a GNC store-within-Rite Aid-store. The Company�� customers may also order prescription refills over the Internet through www.riteaid.com, or over the phone through its telephonic automated refill systems for pick up at a Rite Aid store. It has a strategic alliance with GNC, a retailer of vitamin and mineral supplements.

Apple Inc. jumped 1.7 percent to pace advances among the largest companies. Agilent Technologies Inc. added 6.4 percent as the provider of bio-analytical and electronic measurement services said it will split into two public companies. Rite Aid Corp. (RAD) surged 15 percent as the drugstore chain raised its profit forecast. Oracle Corp. retreated 1.7 percent after the software maker issued a weaker-than-projected outlook.

Speaking of subsectors in the retailing industry we are bullish on, how about the drugstores? They all seem to be running on all cylinders and yesterday Rite-Aid (RAD) had a tremendous day. It was the heaviest traded stock on all of the exchanges and saw its shares rise $0.87 (23.45%) to close at $4.58/share. Rite-Aid is the first among the 'Big Three' to report quarterly results so we find it interesting that they saw an increase in same store sales and saw profits driven by generic drugs. We have been told that this is going to be the bottom line driver for the industry via nearly everyone and that it would impact the top line as generics replaced the more expensive branded drugs. We care about earnings growth more than revenue growth, especially when the stall in revenues is due to switching to higher margin product which is purchased for a lower price. The market gets this and is pushing all of these names higher. In hindsight we wish we had been more bullish of Rite-Aid earlier, but hindsight is always perfect.

Dividend Stocks That Increased Payout in September
Accenture plc (NYSE: ACN) announced a 14.8%, or $0.12 per share, increase to its semiannual dividend. The management consulting firm will now pay a semiannual dividend of $0.93. Shares yield 2.53%. Agruim Inc. (NYSE: AGU) boosted its dividend by $1.00 per share to a total dividend of $3.00 on an annualized basis. Shares of the global retailer of agricultural products now sprout a 3.54% yield. Air Industries Group Inc. (NYSE: AIRI) doubled its dividend to $0.125 per share. The maker of airplane and helicopter parts now floats a lofty yield of 6.6%. Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc. (NYSE: ARE) upped its dividend 4.6% to $0.68 per quarter for a yield of 4.21%. Banner Corp. (Nasdaq: BANR) boosted its quarterly dividend 25% to $0.15 per share. The growth in 2012 follows the success of hard cider sales the year before, which saw a 40% increase.
